The physical security system is strict and uncompromising. During the planning and construction of the IT installations, strong consideration was given to a wide variety of threats such as sabotage, concealed or unconcealed attempts at intrusion, and attempts to introduce electronic equipment for monitoring or disturbance. Because the information stored at the sites is sensitive and is of interest to hostile elements (both commercial and nationalistic), exceptional care is exercised with respect to the means of safety and security.

In order to withstand external threats, the installations are protected by a massive double enclosure of reinforced concrete. The entire site and the project rooms inside it have been checked for resistance to the danger of explosives from outside, including direct hits at the structure’s critical points and penetration through unprotected openings (balcony/window) as well as explosions inside. Also taken into account are scenarios such as a nearby hit and an underground explosion near the structure’s wall. The installation’s special-purpose equipment — both for IT and for power — is located at underground levels, inside an internal structure which occupies an outer enclosure of reinforced concrete, so that the equipment is maximally protected against most of those threats.

The installation’s infrastructure systems are located in a separate structure inside the IT installation itself. They too are inside an underground building within the walls of the structure. Thus they are protected every moment of the day and night by the underground structure’s double enclosure of reinforced concrete, by the installation’s security system (access control and CCTV), and by its staff of guards.

The installation’s human guard regime represents the highest standard in terms of the installed systems employed, in terms of the staff’s selection and training, and in terms of the security procedures enforced on site.

Altogether there are eight circles of security deployment, external and internal, including fencing, cameras, gates, guards, a magnetic card system, a palmprint system, caged areas, and separation of rooms. Access to various sections of the installation requires various different levels of permission, and sally ports — where one door closes behind an entering visitor and the next door inward will not open without another step of authentication — prevent unauthorized wandering.

The security staff has been carefully chosen, having qualified through many levels of selection and succeeded in comprehensive tests of personal reliability. The staff consists of combat unit veterans and graduates of military command courses.

The security scheme at the facility is arranged so that each of its constituent systems supports and backs up the others in real time.

All the door and entranceways are monitored by an entry control system that uses proximity cards, biometric hand readers, and sally ports for maximal separation between the various parts of the facility as each visitor is guided in the appropriate direction. Most of the doors are also monitored by an intrusion detection system that handles warnings in additional cases. The installation is photographed throughout the day and night by a closed-circuit surveillance and recording system that covers all the external views as well as the interior.

To manage the complex and varied deployment of systems inside the MedOne installations, a sophisticated command-and-control station has been put in place. There all the activity on all the systems can be monitored and supervised in keeping with current needs and scenarios.

The buildings are 15 meters underground (49 feet), and there is a distinct physical separation between the hosting rooms and the support system rooms. The hosting rooms’ internal design and engineering characteristics make them suitable for hosting all existing server types, with almost no weight limitation.
