Traiana transfers its R&D server farm to MedOne’s hosting installations
Traiana Inc., developer of the world’s leading platform for financial transaction processing, moved its R&D server farm to MedOne’s installations in order to enjoy a higher-level SLA for survivability and availability along with the ability to grow and expand as appropriate to its Israeli activities.
Traiana Inc. provides processing and clearing services for trade between financial institutions such as banks, brokerages, hedge funds, institutional investors, and others. As the scope of trading accelerated for financial products in the world, the need arose for a global service enabling transactions to be automated on a large scale while reducing the risks and costs for each of the market’s players. Harmony, the service that Traiana provides, is the world standard today in the field of currencies, and it is used by the world’s 50 largest banks. The Harmony service processes millions of transactions a day, on the magnitude of trillions of dollars.
The company, which began as an Israeli start-up in 2000, today supplies a platform that serves most of the world’s currency trading traffic. Because Traiana’s systems are so vital and significant, any failure in them could cause a global crisis in currency trading.
The business situation
Traiana and EBS are subsidiaries of ICAP, a publicly traded British company that is considered the world’s largest interbank brokerage group. “For that reason,” says Shai Arnon, VP IT at Traiana, “we are held to high standards of availability, survivability, and ability to stand up under constant examination from external and regulatory bodies. Even the smallest malfunction, the employees’ water cooler leaking and threatening to flood the floor, would emphasize to us that we unnecessarily spend time and resources on matters that are not part of our core activities.
“Traiana’s R&D uses hundreds of servers, tens of storage systems, and hundreds of databases. At the same time, many servers are at work handling administrative activities, files, portals, and so on. As the company’s activities grew and developed, and we maintained our compliance with international standards and regulations, a series of challenges arose regarding work with the in-house servers. We quickly found ourselves devoting considerable resources, which we shouldn’t have devoted, to upgrading the electrical and air-conditioning infrastructures.”
When the volume of work in Israel outgrew all possible expansion of Traiana’s Israeli R&D server farm, Traiana decided to entrust its server farm to an external hosting company.
“On our first visit to MedOne, I already realized we were observing a new level,” Arnon recalls. “As a country with operations all around the world, and with critical systems that must not shut down for even a fraction of a second, we know a thing or two about availability and survivability. And we work with the world’s leading, best respected hosting farms of their kind.
“However, because this Israeli server farm of ours was basically devoted to R&D, at that point we decided that we couldn’t justify the extra cost of the top-level service agreement that MedOne offers. We chose a different supplier, as a matter of cost-consciousness.
“Our services in Israel expanded, our quality demands increased constantly, and eventually we had to leave that supplier. We understood that the potential cost of a system shutdown was much more significant than whatever price we paid for service.
“We looked for advanced, specialized hosting services that could meet our requirements regarding uptime and SLA, even at a higher fee.”
“Having found our previous supplier of hosting services unable to deal with the volume of Traiana’s work, we decided to move all the company’s servers over to the MedOne installations. We chose MedOne in light of the realization that their environment provides the highest level of server hosting infrastructures using specialized cages, at top world-class levels of survivability and security, and with the ability to quickly increase electrical consumption and cage size,” Arnon explains. “From the first moment, we could see that MedOne is a company that has hosting embedded deep in its DNA. The fact that MedOne specializes in hosting creates many advantages for us as clients, because they are veterans, they are experienced, and they are professional in every sense of the word, so that I can get any problem solved. In minutes. I can say wholeheartedly that the team at MedOne are the best of their kind in the business.”
Further reasons that the MedOne solution was chosen
In terms of security, the installed systems and on-site procedures both meet the highest standards.
The installations are protected both by a massive double enclosure of reinforced concrete and by advanced security systems (entry control and more), with guards on duty 24/7.
The SLA level guarantees 99.99% annual availability.
The various sections inside the facility are highly isolated from one another.
The team of guards was selected with care, after many stages of selection and after comprehensive tests of reliability.
All the doors and entrances are monitored by an entry control system that includes proximity cards, biometric handprint readers, and sally ports to provide maximal mutual isolation of the facility’s different areas and of each visitor’s incoming route. (In the sally ports, one door closes behind an entering visitor and the next door inward will not open without another step of authentication.)
The configuration for hosting Traiana is housed in a specialized cage, with servers and communications equipment under the sole ownership of Traiana and accessible only to Traiana’s employees. The equipment includes cabinets with hundreds of servers and with storage systems and advanced communications equipment. The MedOne installations provide Traiana with a complete, comprehensive solution for survivability and business continuity, meeting rigorous SLA goals that comply with the international standards embraced by the company worldwide.
The migration of the server farm onto the MedOne installations was completed smoothly and with remarkable speed.
Thanks to the high standards of MedOne, Traiana’s staff can now enjoy peace of mind in the knowledge that their servers are safe, operational, and constantly available.
“One thing we learned for moving our servers to MedOne is that the process is relatively simple and inexpensive,” Arnon recounts. “With the help of the MedOne people, we prepared the communications infrastructure at the installation; and as soon as it was ready, we made the move in the nighttime, within a number of hours.
“The next morning all the servers were working as usual, and the operation was completely transparent to our users.
“From my point of view, it’s a whole new world of service, and of peace of mind,” Arnon adds. “Today I know that my servers are at one of the world’s leading sites, and that it gives me uptime that’s real and not just on paper. Besides that, every operation we perform — from adding a new server to making changes in an old one — gets full cooperation and support from the MedOne team. They demonstrate a praiseworthy level of service.
“At any given time, the quantity of resources invested can be checked in order to ensure that for a client like us, or for various other clients with server farms there that are considered the most critical in the country, the hosting is operating at the highest level. For such peace of mind, there really is no substitute.
“Looking back, I can say that when we previously opted for a partner that was less than the best, it turned out that we made a mistake and it cost us dearly in time, money, and discomfort,” Arnon adds. “When my colleagues ask me now to recommend a hosting site, I tell them without reservation that hosting has to be the site’s bread and butter. In other words, choose someone like MedOne.”
Traiana is already looking ahead to further phases: “Our parent company, ICAP, knows how to appreciate the excellent R&D skills available in Israel and it already intends to move some of the company’s development centers to Israel from other countries,” Arnon says in conclusion. “In that case, there’s no doubt we will need to expand our hosted environment significantly, and for us that further strengthens the case for choosing MedOne — where the options for growth and expansion are the greatest of their kind in the business.”
Arnon sums up: “Re-hosting the server farm at MedOne has proven itself in all ways. We received a complete, comprehensive business continuity solution, while reducing risks of shutdown and ensuring maximum uptime. Now we can rest easy at last.”

The business situation
As the scope of its service in Israel expanded, Traiana understood that its current hosting service provider was unable to provide the necessary SLA and uptime, and so Traiana decided to re-host its server farm at a company specializing in hosting.
All the servers were moved to the MedOne facilities, in light of the realization that the MedOne environment provides the highest level of server hosting infrastructures on a cage basis at levels of survivability and security that match the world’s leading installations and with the ability to grow quickly in terms of electrical consumption and cage size.
